City Councilor John Connolly to run for mayor

City Councilor John Connolly this week announced his intention to run for mayor this year.

Connolly started his campaign by focusing on the need to bring change to Boston Public Schools. He is a former teacher and the father of two school-aged children.

“I am running because every child deserves a world-class education from the Boston Public Schools, and the time to deliver that education is now,” Connolly said in a press release. “Mayor [Thomas] Menino is a good man, and I respect his deep commitment to our city, but transforming our schools requires new ideas, new energy, and a bold desire to challenge the status quo.”

Connolly was first elected to an at-large seat on the Boston City Council in 2007. Menino, who has not yet announced whether he will run for re-election, is Boston’s longest-serving mayor. He was first elected to office in 1993.

Connolly’s campaign website is connollyforboston.com.
