Occupy Roxbury, a local version of the Occupy Wall Street protest movement, is forming and holding its first meeting on Jan. 15.

Occupy Wall Street, a protest camp against economic inequality and other issues, formed in New York City last fall. Various versions sprung up around the country, including Occupy Boston, which was shut down by city officials in December. Neighborhood and small-town versions have since taken root, including Occupy JP in Jamaica Plain. Some rallies called Occupy the Hood were held in Dudley Square last fall.

The idea behind local Occupy groups is to keep the movement alive by turning into local, grassroots political and community service actions.

Abe Spritzler, one of the organizers of Occupy Roxbury, said he is involved in the Occupy JP group. But, he added, Occupy Roxbury is not directly connected with any other Occupy group.

This Sunday’s Occupy Roxbury meeting will run 4-6 p.m. at a house at 92 Moreland St. in Roxbury. Space is limited and people planning to attend should contact Spritzler at aspritzler@gmail.com or 617-997-7381.
