With John Kerry, the senior U.S. senator from Massachusetts, expected to be confirmed soon as the next U.S. secretary of state, elected officials are gearing up for another special election.
U.S. Rep. Edward Markey (5th District) has declared his intention to run, while U.S. Reps. Mike Capuano (7th District), who represents Mission Hill, and Stephen Lynch (8th District) are among other possible candidates.
When the Gazette contacted Capuano’s office on Dec. 21, the day President Barack Obama nominated Kerry, spokesperson Jon Lenicheck replied, “Congressman Capuano is looking forward to spending the holidays with his family and talking with them about his future.”
The Gazette recently checked back in with Capuano’s office and was told there is nothing new to report.
Meanwhile, Lynch told the Gazette through a spokesperson he is weighing a run for the Senate seat.
“I am giving serious consideration to a run for the United States Senate and am grateful for the support and encouragement I have received in recent days,” said Lynch. “As we await Senator Kerry’s confirmation hearings, I will continue to weigh my options and decide the best way to serve our communities.”
If Kerry is in fact confirmed, an interim senator would be appointed by Gov. Deval Patrick. Former U.S. Rep. Barney Frank has already thrown his name out there for that appointment. Within 145 to 160 days of Kerry vacating his position, a special election would take place to find his successor.

Lynch should run and be elected. It's not often that a hard working American has a chance to add balance and common sense to the problems the United States faces.
