The surviving Boston Marathon suspect is in custody, according to the Boston Police Department (BPD).
Dzhokhar A. Tsarnaev, 19, was taken into custody tonight at a home in Watertown where he was hiding in a boat in a yard. He was located by a resident’s tip confirmed by a heat-detecting infrared camera on a helicopter, according to the State Police.
Boston Police Commissioner Ed Davis said in a televised press conference afterward that law enforcement officers exchanged gunfire with Tsarnaev while he was in the boat and then found him wounded. It is unclear whether the suspect was wounded at that time or in an earlier shootout that Davis said involved more than 200 rounds fire and the criminals using handmade grenades. Davis described the suspect as in “serious” condition.
Another suspect, identified as Dzhokhar Tsarnaev’s brother Tamerlan, died early this morning after being wounded during a police shootout last night.
Dzhokhar Tsarnaev is also a suspect in the killing of a Massachusetts Institute of Technology police officer and the wounding of an MBTA Transit Police officer, among many other crimes.
