As expected, Republican Gov. Charlie Baker and Democrat U.S. Senator Elizabeth Warren cruised to easy re-election victories, as Mission Hill residents helped decide those contests, as well as several other statewide races and ballot questions on the Nov. 6 Election Day.
Warren defeated challengers Republican Geoff Diehl and Independent Shiva Ayyadurai by wide, double-digit margins, setting herself up for what is expected to be a Presidential campaign in 2020. Meanwhile, Baker easily dispensed his Democratic opponent, Jay Gonzalez, beating him by more than 20 points.
Question 1, which is a proposed law that would limit the number of patients that could be assigned to a registered nurse at hospitals and certain other health care facilities, was easily defeated, while Question 2 (campaign finance reform) and Question 3 (protecting transgender rights) were both given the green light.
Democrat Maura Healey, a Democrat, beat Republican challenger James McMahon to remain the state Attorney General, while Democrat Bill Galvin knocked off Republican Anthony Amore and Juan Sanchez, a Green-Rainbow Party candidate, to stay the state Secretary of State.
Incumbent Deborah Goldberg, a Democrat, was victorious over Republican Keiko Orrall and Green-Rainbow Party candidate Jamie Guerin for the state Treasurer position, while state Auditor Suzanne Bump (Democrat) was successful in her re-election attempt.
The only competitive local race of note was for Suffolk County District Attorney. Democrat Rachel Rollins defeated Independent Reformer Michael Maloney
Ayanna Pressley, candidate for the Congressional District 7 seat; state Sen. Sonia Chang-Díaz; and Nika Elugardo, candidate for the 15th Suffolk District seat, all won their election, as they did not have a challenger on Nov. 6.
