What’s Happening on Main Streets

By Courtney Wright

Happy March and Women’s History Month! Don’t forget that this Saturday, March 8 is International Women’s Day.

Before we move into what’s happening in March, I wanted to give a shout out to some Mission Hill Community leaders who were honored this past month for their contributions to our neighborhood and the City of Boston. Last Friday, the 28th, John Jackson (Tobin Community Center) and Willie Pearl Clark (Mission Main Tenants Task Force) were honored as 2025 Black Excellence on the Hill Honorees at the Massachusetts State House by the Massachusetts Black and Latino Caucus. That same night, John Jackson was honored at the Celtics’ game for their “Heroes Among Us” award for his tireless work over the course of his life dedicated to youth and families in Mission Hill and beyond. Congratulations to both incredible individuals, we’re lucky to have you! I would also like to thank our State Representative Chynah Tyler, who spearheaded the Black Restaurant Challenge that took place over the month of February. Rep. Tyler celebrated the initiative locally by bringing together students from Northeastern’s Black Student Union for lunch at Flames, MH’s locally black owned restaurant.

As the weather starts to warm up, we have several community clean-up days in the works to help prepare the neighborhood for Spring. On Saturday, March 15th, Main Streets is hosting a group of about 50 students who will be cleaning up the streets and sidewalks along the MH Business District of Tremont and Huntington and adjacent side streets. We will then have another group out during the final weekend of March. On April 12th, is the City’s annual Love Your Block neighborhood clean up day for Mission Hill. MH Main Streets is one of the registered sites so if you would like to join our Board and other volunteers to participate in a clean-up during Love Your Block, please reach out to me at [email protected].

On Saturday, March 15th the Boston Police Gaelic Column Pipes and Drum Band will be doing their annual pub crawl across the City in the lead up to St. Patrick’s Day and this year (drumroll)…  Mission Hill Main Streets was able to get Brigham Circle added to their stops for the evening! Thank you to our Board member, Pam Carthy for her help in pulling this off! While times are not definite due to the nature of the crawl, we expect the Pipes and Drum Band to be in Brigham Circle at around 6:30 p.m. on Saturday the 15th, where they will play for about 15-20 minutes at Penguin Pizza and then walk over and play at the Mission Bar and Grill. Both restaurants will have Irish specials featured as well. Everyone who attends will be entered to win a gift basket sponsored by Guinness! We are really excited to bring the Pipes and Drum Band through Mission Hill this year and hope that many of you will join us for a fun and festive evening!
