‘Big Read’ of immigration novel on the way

Mission Hill’s annual “Big Read”—a community-wide book-reading and discussion program—will kick off with a Sept. 18 celebration in Brigham Circle.

Big Read is a program of the National Endowment for the Arts aimed at providing residents with the opportunity to read and discuss a single book within their communities. This year’s book is the 2009 novel “Into the Beautiful North” by Luis Alberto Urrea. It tells the story of a group of Mexican women who attempt to repopulate and defend their town when most of the men move north to the U.S.

Sociedad Latina will kick off the program with “La Vida Latina,” a celebration of Latino heritage, at the Sept. 18 event, 5 to 8 p.m.

The event will include music and dancing with Jesús Pagan y su Orquesta, and Latin American food provided by neighborhood restaurants.

Four monthly discussions on the book will be held at the Parker Hill Branch Library. Copies of the book will be available at the library.

Sociedad Latina’s website is sociedadlatina.org. Big Read’s Mission Hill website can be found through neabigread.org.
