Northeastern University (NU) has filed a project notification form (PNF) for a 207-unit student housing development at 10 Burke St. that will have 800 beds, according to documents filed with the Boston Redevelopment Authority (BRA).
A community meeting will be held on the project Feb. 8 at 716 Columbus Ave., starting at 6 p.m.
The project is part of NU’s institutional master plan (IMP) that was approved by the BRA in 2013, though the project has changed since then. An IMP is a comprehensive development plan that describes an institution’s existing facilities, long-range planning goals and proposed projects.
The project was originally planned to be a mixed-use office and residential development with 350 to 600 beds in a 10-story building. The development is now proposed to be more than 15 stories, topping off at 230 feet. The development would be 310,000 square feet with 800 beds, consisting of two- and four-bedroom apartments.
The proposed project is expected to include 3,000 square feet of commercial space at the ground floor level. It would also have a social lounge, recreation and gaming area, fitness center, academic center and laundry room.
The project would replace a 56-space parking lot, but would not include any on-site parking. NU has other parking spaces throughout the campus that would replace the lost spaces, according to the PNF.
NU plans to lease the property to American Campus Communities (ACA), a Texas-based company. ACA would develop and operate the development through a dormitory license from the City, according to the PNF. NU students in their third, fourth, and fifth years of school would have first right to lease the apartments.
Construction is expected to start near the end of the year and last about two and a half years.
