THE NEW COMMISH

William Gross was sworn in as the 42nd commissioner of the Boston Police Department during a ceremony at the Morning Star Baptist Church on Aug. 6. Gross, who is the first black commissioner of the department, took over for William Evans, who left to take a job at Boston College.
