January
On Monday, January 21, 2019, the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston (MFA), in partnership with Citizens Bank, invites the community to honor the legacy of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. at a free open house. The annual event runs from 10 am to 5 pm, offering an array of programming throughout the day for all ages.
As part of the day’s activities, Mayor Martin J. Walsh will offer remarks and announce the winners of a city-wide essay contest for Middle and High School students held by King Boston. Contest winners, inspired by the legacy of Dr. King and Coretta Scott King, will have the opportunity to read an excerpt from their essay to family, friends and Museum visitors that day.
In addition to enjoying musical performances and joining gallery tours highlighting works by African American artists, visitors are invited to view art created especially for the event by students from the MFA’s 10 Community Arts Initiative partners. The MFA Teen Arts Council will also display an interactive art installation exploring the values of unity, liberation and protest.
In February and March, the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston (MFA), presents four concerts featuring musicians ranging in genre and influences:
HARSH IS TRUTH | This multimedia performance on February 24 by Boston-based collective MASARY Studios (Maria Finkelmeier, Sam “Samo” Okerstrom-Lang and Ryan Edwards) poses the questions: how is truth defined, and how do different perceptions of truth converge in public spaces? Live, original music fused with video projections will illuminate the walls of the MFA’s Remis Auditorium, inviting listeners to contemplate our city’s unique history as a place to rise, resist and share one’s personal truth. The performance is presented in association with the exhibition Ansel Adams in Our Time.
RAFIQ BHATIA | This live performance on March 1 features composer, producer and guitarist Rafiq Bhatia’s latest album, Breaking English, transformed into an immersive multimedia experience by visual artist Michael Cina and video artist Hal Lovemelt. Bhatia will be joined by Ian Chang (Son Lux, Joan as Policewoman) on electronic and acoustic drums and Jackson Hill (Xenia Rubinos) on bass and synthesizers.
BELLS ATLAS | The Oakland-based Bells Atlas performs at the Museum on March 8, blending R&B, psychedelia, jazz and pop. Channeling at once the lo-fi beats of Tune-Yards and the sighing lullabies of Sade, the band’s alchemic music invites listeners to think and feel about life, death and the fluid in-between.
DREAMERS’ CIRCUS | The Scandinavian trio Dreamers’ Circus, which has emerged as a force to be reckoned with in Nordic world music, make their North American premiere at the MFA on March 27. Approaching arrangement from the standpoint of innovation, the group’s members—Nikolaj Busk and Rune Tonsgaard Sørensen of Denmark, and Ale Carr of Sweden—invent new forms from traditions of folk music in Denmark, Sweden and Iceland, and the far reaches of the Faroe Islands and Greenland.
