The Mission Hill Arts Festival is officially in full swing for its 2026 season, transforming The Yard at the Tobin Community Center into a vibrant hub of music, arts, and conversation. With the theme of "Rhythm" guiding this year's performances, the festival has two more scheduled days of programming left this month to bring neighbors and artists together.
Founded in 2021 by arts curator Luisa Harris and pianist, composer, and educator Kevin Harris, the festival was originally established to give artists a platform and allow audiences to safely reconnect in the aftermath of the pandemic. Today, it has grown into a thriving community gathering that features both established and emerging artists across a wide variety of styles and mediums.
A unique hallmark of the Mission Hill Arts Festival is its emphasis on dialogue. Rather than simply hosting performances, the festival intentionally dedicates time for the audience to converse with the artists and festival collaborators, fostering an open climate of shared growth and community connection.
This year's theme, "Rhythm," asks attendees to consider how the regular, recurring patterns of sounds, movements, and life events are fundamental to sustaining our own originality. Following an August 1 performance focused on American rhythms by harmonica player Shane Sager, the festival will conclude its summer schedule with two culturally rich showcases.
The remaining lineup for this month includes:
• August 15: HSTF Batey Comunitario will highlight Puerto Rican rhythms. A Batey Comunitario is a space for communal expression derived from the traditional "bomba" dance in Puerto Rico.
• August 29: The DADA Quartet will explore Venezuelan rhythms. This vocal quartet is known for redefining Venezuelan root-based music through a contemporary lens and a global perspective.
