MHNHS Holds Annual Arbor Day Celebration

Mission Hill Neighborhood Housing Services (MHNHS) held its Third Annual Arbor Day and First Arbor Day Celebration as a certified Arboretum in Kevin W. Fitzgerald Park on April 26th! MHNHS Board and Staff, Northeastern Arboretum staff, Mission Hill neighbors, students from local universities, and community members of all kinds came together on this beautiful day to help out around Fitzgerald Park. Over 60 volunteers participated in the many planting and beautification activities and many neighbors stopped by to listen to the live music from Northeastern Jazz Ensemble, participate in the raffle, pick up a free tree seedling, or just enjoy the beautiful panoramic views of the Boston skyline that Fitzgerald Park offers.

Northeastern Arboretum helped us expand the tree species count in the Arboretum by generously donating these new trees, Pignut Hickory, Canadian Hemlock, Service Berry.
Volunteers helped to plant dozens of new pollinators throughout the park that will attract birds and bees and add a beautiful pop of color.

In addition to planting trees, flowers, and greenery, volunteers also worked enthusiastically to clear sumac, invasive plants, and noxious weeds throughout the Park. Their tireless effort not only improved the look of Fitzgerald Park, but they were the first step in making way for, beautiful, native meadows in the future!
