Hill Happenings

Blessed with gorgeous weather, dozens of Mission Hill golfers participated in the Mission Hill Post 327 Golf Fundraiser last week at Norwood Country Club.

Our Commander, Col. George Rollins organized the terrific event and thanks to our many sponsors, including The Mission Bar & Grill, Brendan Behan’s, the Corrib Pub in West Roxbury, Burke’s Seafood in Quincy, Victory Point Restaurant in Quincy, and Stephen Quigley, the owner of Independent News Group.

Other generous sponsors were Alba Restaurant and The Fours, both in Quincy, Capital Grill, Legal Seafood, Moo Steak House, The Real House, The Shanty and the 110 Grill.

Brigadier General Enoch ‘Woody’ Woodhouse, our beloved M.H. Post member took the podium and spoke to the golfers while they clenched their thirst after playing 18 holes. Our Mission Hill City Councilor, Sharon Durkan, is a supporter of our Post, and Councilor Durkan expressed a few upbeat words.

The team of golfers, Peter Scott, his son, Stephen Scott, Joe King and Matt Malin displayed their masterly putting to finish in first place. Peter Scott, my ‘67 Mission High classmate, is a retired Brookline Police Captain, and Joe King is also a former Brookline Policeman. Matt Malin and Stephen Scott were classmates at Boston University.

Thanks to good guy Barry Twomey for driving me, Woody and my brother Dan in the “Woodymobile” to the golf event. The Woodymobile was previously owned and operated by General Brigadier Woodhouse back in his driving years.

Youthful looking Davey Jelloe turned 81 yesterday (Oct. 1). Davey is a U.S. Army veteran and a M.H. Post member. Back in the day Davey worked as a “soda jerk” at Harvard Drug Store (Longwood and Huntington Ave.) and as a little kid I enjoyed then15-cent Vanilla Cokes that Davey would serve me.

Davey’s delightful wife, Judy will celebrate her birthday Oct. 6.

Condolences to the family of Patrick ‘Ricky’ Gleeson who passed away unexpectedly Sept. 2 at his home in Dedham.

Ricky is from the lineage of the exceptional Ireland – Mission Hill Gleeson family. Ricky was a great guy who graduated from Catholic Memorial High in 1990. He was a fine family man, and Ricky loved mentoring his son Devan Jones in baseball and hockey.

Correction: Last month I incorrectly wrote that Andy Yosinoff is the women’s basketball coach at Emerson College.

Coach Andy, a Mission Hill Post member, will soon begin his 50th season as women’s basketball coach at Emmanuel College, where he has amassed 951 wins.

Last week Richie McDermott was walking from his house down Sachem Street, where he sifted through a box of papers discarded on the sidewalk.

By the long arm of coincidence, the paperwork included pertinent information about his great uncle, Bernard J. Farrell from Mission Hill, who served in the Army when he was killed during World War II on March 20, 1945. Bernard is buried at Henri-Chapelle American Cemetery in Belgium.

Thank God for Mr. Farrell and those from the greatest generation.

The “Walk for the Poor” will commence tomorrow (Oct. 3) at 9 a.m. at Mission Church. The fundraising walk goes down Tremont Street to Roxbury and ends at Brendan Behan’s Pub in J.P. Behan, where proprietor Michel Soltani will provide free lunch and soft drinks for the walkers.

I was sorry to hear of the passing of Mike ‘Rudi’ McAlduff last week. Rudi, a retired MBTA bus driver, had a great attitude and he wore a constant contagious smile.

Back in the day Rudi was a power hitting catcher in the Mission Hill Softball League.

RIP, Rudi.

Maurice ‘Mossy’ Martin shown with Courtney Wright at the ribbon cutting for Empire Fruit.

Welcome to Mission Hill, Diego Restrepo, who opened his new business, Empire Fruit, last week at 1536 Tremont St.

I met Diego, a native of Columbia, at his grand opening on Friday (Sept. 25).

Empire Fruit serves healthy fresh juices, fruit bowls, ice cream, and coffee.

At this location (across from Mission Church) back in the ‘60s, I hung out in that popular place, then called Fontains.

Owned by beloved Teddy and Connie, Fontaines served sodas, milk shakes, and sandwiches. Fontaines was favored by the Mission school kids and parishioners stopping in from the Church, particularly on Wednesday evenings after hearing Father Manton conduct the Novena.

The Lilian Prep Early Education Academy in Mission Hill 80 Terrace Street is enrolling full- and part-time daycare placements.

I stopped by the place Friday (Sept. 25) for the “Opening Event,” and I enjoyed chatting with devoted owner, Sara Alaoeasheg, and her staff.

The house is set up wonderfully, conducive to preschoolers and 5- and 6-year-old children.

Sara can be reached at [email protected] or at 857-308-8846..

The Mission Hill Road Race was postponed due to inclement weather. The new race time will hopefully be Sunday, Oct. 18, at 10 a.m., walkers start at 9 a.m. at Kevin Fitzgerald Park.
