Senior Life: Social Security goes direct deposit

Starting on March 1, all Social Security and Supplemental Security Income (SSI) benefits are only being paid electronically by direct deposit under a new rule from the U.S. Department of the Treasury.

More than 90 percent of people receiving Social Security benefits already get them electronically, according to the Social Security Administration.

There are several reasons for the change, according to the Social Security Administration, including better security that avoids stolen checks, and cost savings to both the government and recipients.

For information about arranging electronic benefit payments, see godirect.org. The nearest Social Security office is at 10 Malcolm X Blvd. in Roxbury. For more office information, call 1-800-772-1213.
