Expert tips on wines to bring to dinner

With holiday feasts on the horizon, ODB Liquors Manager Vivian Tran gave the Gazette some recommendations for wines and spirits that are sure to impress.

For an affordable bottle of wine to bring to dinner, Tran suggested Smoking Loon Cabernet Sauvignon, available for $10.99.

“A ‘cab’ will pair well with roasts,” she said.

For a posher choice, Tran recommended a Poppy Paso Robles Cabernet Sauvignon for $14.99.

“It’s full-bodied, not too oak-y, and it doesn’t have those after-taste tannins,” she said. “It’s very easy to drink.”

For a wine splurge, Tran suggested a personal favorite, Stag’s Leap Artemis, also a cabernet sauvignon.

“This is one of the best bottles to bring to anybody’s house,” she said. “I’d drink it every single day if I could afford it.”

As for a gift of spirits, Tran said that bourbons are very trendy this year. She suggested a Woodford Reserve, selling for $41.99.

“It’s oak-y and not too spicy. You can drink it neat or in a cocktail,” she said.

For a Champagne-like drink, Tran suggested an Italian Prosecco, La Marca, for $14.99.

“It’s well balanced, not too dry or too sweet,” she said.

ODB is located at 732 Huntington Ave. in Brigham Circle.
