State rep. praises Menino’s legacy

Local state Rep. Jeffrey Sánchez had nothing but praise for Mayor Thomas Menino when asked about his tenure in office. Menino is stepping down after 20 years in office.

Sánchez was at first speechless when the Gazette asked him for comment on Menino, before saying he has “so many feelings.”

“I started my career in government working for the mayor,” said Sánchez, noting that he was Menino’s liaison to the Hispanic community in Mission Hill, East Boston and Jamaica Plain.

He commended Menino for helping to acquire federal funds for the redevelopment of the Mission Main housing development, where Sánchez grew up. The representative said the redevelopment changed Mission Main in a positive way. Sánchez also praised the mayor for his work in improving the Longwood Medical Area, which he said has benefited Mission Hill, and for helping force Northeastern University to build more dorms.
