Brigham and Women’s surgeon dies in hospital shooting; suspect dead

The Brigham and Women’s Hospital doctor shot yesterday inside the hospital died in surgery, according to the Boston Police Department. The suspect was found dead elsewhere in the hospital from an apparently self-inflicted gunshot wound.

The doctor killed in the shooting was identified as Michael Davidson, 44, of Wellesley. The suspect was identified as Stephen Pasceri, 55, of Millbury.

According to BPD, Pasceri entered the hospital’s Shapiro Building at 70 Francis St. around 11 a.m. Tuesday and asked to speak to Dr. Davidson. While meeting with the doctor, Pasceri pulled a gun and shot him twice. Pasceri then shot himself.

BPD did not offer an explanation of what motivated Pasceri.

BPD praised Brigham and Women’s for an “exceptional” safety response under “extreme condition” to treat Dr. Davidson and secure the area. Hospital staff previously underwent “active shooter” training for that type of situation with BPD officers, the department said.
