MFA displays BPS students’ art

Visitors to the Museum of Fine Arts (MFA) can now view the work of Boston Public Schools students at a new exhibition of local youth artists called “HOMiE: In Our Eyes,” according to a press release.

The exhibition is the result of a partnership of Boston Public Schools and the MFA celebration of the 10th Anniversary of the Teen Arts Council (TAC). The TAC is the MFA’s leadership development program to foster team-building and workplace skills for Boston-area teens.

“Not one day goes by that I am not impressed by the work of our students,” said BPS Superintendent Tommy Chang, according to the press release. “I am grateful to the MFA Boston for fully embracing the creativity of our young people and for their many years of collaboration and commitment.”

The exhibition features 44 paintings, drawings, and photographs created and curated by local teenagers. The artwork all explores the idea of home—how it’s defined, how it influences identity, and how it can change over time.

“On behalf of the committee, we would like to congratulate all of the BPS students who played a role in the creation and launch of this exhibit,” said Boston School Committee Chairperson Michael O’Neill, according to the press release. “This work is an inspiration to us all, and I encourage everyone to visit the showcase.”

Students were mentored by professionals from the community including Nadeem Mazen, a Cambridge City Councilor and founder of danger!awesome and Nimblebot; Lisa Simmons, director of the Roxbury International Film Festival; Jay Calderin, founder of Boston Fashion Week; and local artist Evelyn Rydz.

The exhibition made its debut on July 16, and will be on view until Jan. 22 in the Bernard and Barbara Stern Shapiro Gallery. The MFA will also host gallery talks with the artists, a spoken word and poetry event, and panel discussions.
