Wentworth Institute of Technology (WIT) students will be working in Jamaica Plain to develop design ideas for mixed-use projects along the Southwest Corridor this spring and summer as an academic exercise.
The Community Design Studio program will analyze existing proposals for the study area, including the Jackson Square Re-development Initiative, and will make proposals describing how to tailor existing plans to the requirements of the community, WIT architecture professor Manuel Delgado told the Gazette.
The completed design project will include a “cohesive vision for the neighborhood, developed by the students in relationship to ideals set by the community and the city,” Delgado said.
The students have already begun their research. They also were present at the S. Huntington Avenue “corridor plan” meeting on Jan. 9, taking notes.
Similar projects have taken place in Allston and Fenway since 2004.
