Police: Bomb suspects linked to tonight’s crimes; 1 dead, 1 still at large

The suspects in the Boston Marathon bombings are also suspects in tonight’s crimes in Cambridge and Watertown, including the killing of a campus police officer and explosives thrown at police cars, according to State Police at a televised press conference early this morning. One of the suspects is still at large.

The other suspect is dead, according to Boston Police Commissioner Ed Davis.

The suspect at large has been known as “Suspect 2” in FBI photos released earlier. The suspect is described as a light-skinned or white man with “longer” brown, curly hair and wearing a gray hooded sweatshirt. A new image of him in a Cambridge store has been released by the Boston Police Department (BPD). He is considered heavily armed and extremely dangerous.

The bombing suspects are linked to a series of crimes late last night and early this morning, according to the State Police. The crimes started with the robbery of a convenience store in Cambridge, followed by the fatal shooting of a Massachusetts Institute of Technology police officer. Next was a carjacking in Cambridge that led to a police pursuit into Watertown during which the carjackers threw explosive devices at police vehicles and engaged in a shootout, according to the State Police. An MBTA Transit Police officer was critically wounded in that shootout, according to the State Police.

One suspect was shot and taken into custody, according to the State Police. That apparently is the FBI’s “Suspect 1,” whom BPD Commissioner Davis said is dead. The other suspect is at large and a massive search appears to be under way in Watertown. People are urged to avoid Watertown or, if already there, to stay indoors with locked doors.
