The Huntington YMCA is planning its April reopening following over a year of construction work for Northeastern University’s (NU) controversial GrandMarc dorm.
“We have been renovating the rest of our facility, so come April, our pool, basketball courts, handball [and] racquetball courts, steam and sauna rooms, three types of locker rooms, and studio space will be open,” YMCA Director of Membership Sales and Service Angela Sotolongo told the Gazette last week. “In the fall, our interactive lobby, child watch, additional studio and teen arcade space will open.”
When completed, the GrandMarc at Northeastern project, located at 316 Huntington Ave., behind the YMCA building, will allow NU to keep its promise to Mission Hill residents of 600 more on-campus beds.
Under the plan, developer PPC Land Ventures, Inc.—also known as Phoenix Landing and Lincoln Properties—purchased and demolished the YMCA’s gym, and is now building a 17-story dorm tower in its place. PPC will then lease the dorm to NU long-term. The dorm is expected to open for the fall 2014 semester.
